time to get crafty...

i am going to be selling at Make It! Edmonton again this spring. no biggie, right? i do lots of craft sales... WRONG! this sale has me all in a dither.
i am selling something completely different than usual.

i am stepping out of my cozy crochet comfort zone and selling my dinosaur planters.
craziness, i know.
i'll still have a few cute little crocheted stuffies available at the show but for the most part it will be all new dino planters and cactus cups.
exciting, yes.
nerve wracking, big yes.

my new dilema... how to best display these guys.

i've got a few ideas, but am not looking to spend a pile on a new display so i will have to figure something out before the big weekend.

anyone have any brilliant ideas?
low budget, funky look, easy to fit in my car?

GO!

Kitting vs crochet.

I could probably crochet in my sleep. Seriously. I love to crochet but sometimes I just can't get the look I want with crochet.
Knitting. A thorn in my side. I love the look of knitting. Love.
Knitting does not love me. I am the slowest most confused knitter. I'm trying. Again.
I think people are either good at crochet OR knitting. Not both. I am definitely a crocheter by nature. I learned both at the same time from my grandma (thank you for that grandma... So glad you passed that on to me. I see it as a gift that keeps giving) but was never very good at knitting and just took to crocheting like a fish to water.
Why? Who knows.
Will I keep trying? You bet. I don't like to admit defeat!

Here is my latest attempt. And one of the few finished knitting projects I've ever done.

the latest addition...

i know that trying to get ready for a big craft sale is probably not the best time to be messing around with new ideas, but i saw a super cute vintage picture and i had to try it.
i've gotten a great response for these little guys...
i'm going to try and get as many made up as possible so i will have a small flock of them at Make It!

what color combos would you like best?
i'm open to suggestions!

i'm calling them little hooters.
they will be available for purchase at Make it!

check out all the awesome vendors and get the details here

tis the season?

normally i really slow down on the crochet front come spring... this year, not so much! i have been super busy getting custom orders finished up so i can get monsters made for Make It! Edmonton.
i have some done but i need a lot more... good thing i have a whole basket of monster bodies done that are just waiting for the gift of sight... they are currently eyeball-less, but it won't take a lot of time to get those eyeballs stitched on.
my new summer hats were a big hit and a whole batch of them will be on their way to new heads this weekend. then i just have to get a pile of them made to sell at shows this spring. this is what i will be spending every moment of every evening doing for the foreseeable future... once Hugo is asleep i have dinner and then get to work. exciting i know.
i think i will be taking a small break from the jewelry i usually fill my spring and summer with and focusing on other crafty goodies this year.

DIY braided wrap bracelet

ok. i haven't posted one of these for a while...
this is a super fun summer bracelet and a great way to use up scraps of fabric and old shirts.

start out by cutting your strips of fabric. if you are going to use chain you will only need 2 strips of fabric. if you don't want to add chain to your bracelet just cut 3 fabric strips.
i like to use fabrics that stretch and don't fray. if you're using something that will fray just grab your trusty bottle of fray-check or melt the edges if you're using a synthetic fabric that will melt nicely.
depending on the fabric and the look that you're aiming for i would cut the fabric strips 1-3" wide.

pin the ends and chain together with a big safety pin and then pin it to something secure (the couch or my pants usually). braid the entire length of fabric and chain (or just fabric).
here is where i veered off the path of the tutorial i originally got the idea from... that tutorial told me to leave 3-4" tails at both ends and tie it all together to make one long loop you could wrap around your wrist as many times as you liked. (just like in the picture above)
i don't like the ends to stick out. i think it looks messy. sure you could trim them down, but then there would be nubs. i prefer to braid the fabric from the very start to the very end and then sew it closed. its all neat and tidy. if you make your bracelet without the chain you can machine stitch the ends, but because i normally use the chain i just hand sew it. if you want the tails at the end of the bracelet then leave the ends long and knot away.

depending on the bracelet i have in mind and the kind of fabric i'm using sometimes i slide beads onto the fabric to be braided in. then i add charms to the chain with jump rings. you can add as many or as few as you like.

this is a pretty vague set of instructions but its a fun way to use up scraps and a great opportunity to let your imagination run wild!

if my weekend is as productive as i'm hoping i'll have some new ones listed in my etsy shop http://www.kabukikreations.etsy.com/

 happy crafting

Handmade Mafia - my other family...

EDMONTON - Ally Ng has two busy jobs — kindergarten teacher and mafia don.

During the day, the 31-year-old teaches little ones at Belvedere Elementary School. At night and on weekends, she oversees a unique collective of artists and crafters known as the Handmade Mafia.

What began as a smallish group of friends who made things has, in two years, grown to include some 200 members, many of whom put on monthly sales of eclectic, interesting crafts in Old Strathcona.

“It started just as a way for crafters just to hang out and see each other because I had made some wonderful connections through my years of doing craft markets and I never got to see my crafty friends outside the shows,” explains Ng, who started making and selling jewelry when she was teaching in Taiwan a few years ago.

“Providing the crafts was just a really great bonus.”

At first, Ng and her crafty colleagues wanted the show to have an “art walk” feel, so they set up in two locations near Whyte Avenue and 104th Street — the Savoy Lounge and the Orange Hall.

Last year, in the interest of unity and simplicity, they focused on Orange Hall, but as Christmas approached and word of the mafia spread, the cool, quirky venue became too small, so they spilled over into the Strathcona Baptist Church across the street. Now, as the group hits its third anniversary this month, all the vendors will set up shop in the church, and the Orange Hall will be used as a site for public crafting workshops, to spread the love of handmade out into the community, says Ng.

As well, the group will be offering small business development workshops to help its own members grow and prosper.

“I think one of the things that’s really attracting local crafters is that this is a local event, and it’s really about community. We want to foster a real community, so we’re having different social events throughout the year. We’re doing the workshops to educate; we just want it to be like one big family,” says Ng.

“Everybody’s so warm and welcoming that if you’re a new person and you’ve never done this before, you will completely be embraced and made to feel comfortable at your first show.

In any given month, between 35 and 45 artists sell their wares at the show, from handmade accessories and toys to art prints. Mafia vendors tend to be a little younger than those at other shows, “and therefore the crafts are different, they’re maybe a bit more kitschy or a bit more unique than you would find at the Strathcona market,” she says.

The show also gives them a regular place to sell their crafts, where customers can easily find them.

For graphic artist Lon Wenger, who joined the mafia in December, the feedback he’s got from buyers and from colleagues has been invaluable.

“As an artist and a crafter, you spend so much time alone with your craft; it’s nice to have that time at least once a month where you can put it out there into the world and have people receive it and love it. It just gives you that fuel to keep doing it.”

Wenger, who sells his own pop-art style prints, greeting cards and magnets under the name Minus Industries, says the support of the group has been “incredible. It really is a family.

“You find these people who have similar interests, and they’re constantly trying to help you and further your career. They know what you do and you know what they do, so if they need design they’ll approach me or if I need something, I’ll approach them.”

He’s also working on collaborations with other members to put his designs on items like pillows and dolls. “It’s really great to see my art come alive in different ways than I ever would have really expected because of these people that I’ve met.”

Mafia member Karen Whitehead Kuntz is a busy mom of three small kids who makes wooden toys and puzzles, which she sells on the popular craft website Etsy.com, under Mama’s Wood Shop. But the group’s shows have been a great way to meet face-to-face with customers and fellow crafters, some of whom she had only met before online. “They’re very supportive and everyone has ideas for you on setting up your booth, on signage, on where to find resources like business cards and stuff like that.”

When Ng started the group in 2009 after returning from Taiwan, the “handmade revolution” that was so widespread there was just beginning here. In the last two years, that interest has grown tremendously, she says. “I think it has to do with the awareness in society that buying local and supporting local is really important,” she adds.

“People are touched that someone made this by hand and that you can give that gift to someone. It’s a really special connection that goes in a circular motion.”

so much to do... so little time

sometimes i don't know where the days go. already october is coming to an end.... i still can't believe that it is already october and now its almost over!
i have planned this year to have all my christmas shopping done by the end of november but now i'm already starting to wonder if that is going to happen. i have 4 days of craft sales in november and one home party so i won't have much weekend time to do my shopping... maybe i'll have to buy presents at the craft sales!
i've made several presents already so i have made a small dent in the shopping list but not enough to feel like i'm on schedule. this year i am trying to minimize the number of gifts that are commercially purchased opting for handmade or locally produced gifts but some people are hard to buy for!
the snow on the ground has made me realize that i'd better get started on it because like it or not, christmas will come in a blink of an eye.
